Liquid is obviously an essential part of a cats existence, especially water.
Traditionally milk is given to cats, although many are allergic to the lactose in milk and as a consequence suffer from diarrhoea.
The allure of a puddle outside is sometimes more appealing for some cats - this maybe due to the fresh clean water that we supply having to many chemicals or detergents in the smell of the water from our efficiency of cleaning the bowl or from the water itself.
Some cats don't like the bowl they are drinking from sometimes because it is plastic, they prefer ceramic or glass.
If the opening of a bowl is too small it doesn't represent a natural watering hole which a cat would naturally drink from. Sometimes if a cats whiskers touch the perimeter of the bowl this feels uncomfortable and puts the cat off.
The reason for your cat's behaviour maybe due to an underlying medical reason. If you are concerned about your cat, always consult your vet or a cat behaviourist for professional, qualified advice.
